San Diego Comic Con
Day 2 (July 21)
Today was supposed to be my slow day walking around.
But for some reason I was stuck at the Broccoli booth pulling FLCL t-shirts for customers.
Although around 1pm, I had a bit of time. So I walked over to the 4500 area to look for Kaching, the makers of the Canti vinyl figures.
They had all the limited edition Canti figures on display. And they were selling the MAD re-paint Comic Con exclusive white Canti figure. Limited to 88 units & to be autographed by MAD.
Kaching manager MD showed me to their upstairs area, where Toby HK was hanging out. He gave me an autographed vinyl figure of his original character. I will call him slouchy glasses blue dude.
Toby HK designed the “Bruce Lee” outfit Canti (orange-yellow with black stripes down the side) and the “Ghost Camo” Canti (black & white camo).
Kaching manager MD said they were all sold out of the Bruce Lee Canti and the Camo Canti. Wow.
Of course we’re getting couple samples, since Tsurumaki-san wanted to have all of them.
Afterwards, I made my annual stop at Gama-Go booth to buya t-shirt. I really like their space cat series, but they didn’t have a design or color I could wear in public. Not that they were bad designs, but they shouted “asian girl.” And I don’t look good in pink.
So I bought a Tiger Lily t-shirt on a tank shooting hearts.
I also saw another booth that had cute spaceman figures & apparel. I considered buying it… Maybe I’ll go back on Sunday to pick up a tee or mini figure.
At 3pm, I helped at the UART booth for Ikki Tousen author Shiozaki-san’s autograph session. He drew a sketch for every person (limit 30).
“I am Ecchi” hachimaki dude was there. He was at the yozuca* + rino autograph session at Anime Expo. How can you forget an “I am ecchi” hachimaki?
After the autograph session, I had a meeting with MythWear president Jean and does-everything Thuy.
Comic Con is a good time for us to hang out & talk, since it’s not terribly busy for both of us. We talked about the industry, how the licensing business is going, good & bad vendors, trends in Japan & US and all that type of stuff.
When I got back to the booth, voice actress Jennifer Sekiguchi was at the booth. And then former production assistant Maggie was there. She now works at Pixar!
Pixar Maggie worked on FLCL, so VA Jennifer Sekiguchi, Pixar Maggie & I were remember the old days. Oh, so fun.
I invited them to our company dinner.
President Kaname wanted to eat curry, so he demanded that we go to Niban (kinda far). But they were crowded, so we ended up going to Souplantation in the same plaza.
It was production assistant Krystal’s first time at Souplantation. At Anime Expo, freelancer Brian & intern Chandler said it was their first time too. I thought it was a place people usually go to. Or is it a very LA thing?
Of course production assistant Krystal is studying to be an animator, so she got to talk lots to Pixar Maggie. Well, they are doing the same job at Broccoli afterall.
Anyway, busy day tomorrow.
I might do cashier for most of the day.
So come by!
