Fanime 2007 Day 3

Breakfast.
Then we headed over to the green room, so everyone can start drawing their charity auction items.

But before all that peaceful drawing session… I was running around the convention center & hotels trying to find a scanner to scan Inui-sensei’s new manga series to show during his panel. I finally found a staff from the artist’s alley who said he has a scanner & can take care of it around 10:30am.

So I rushed over to the artist’s alley with an autographed book in hand, and got the color proof & preview manga pages scanned. Thank you artist alley staffer Masato!

I stopped by the Broccoli booth to pick up a Di Gi Charat Limited Edition DVD box for Sanada-san to sign for the charity auction. Then designer Chris & producer Dee said they’ve been telling people that the 5pm autograph session is open to everyone. So I decided to keep it as is, altho I had announced something different at Inui-sensei’s panel the other day.

We arranged for a third autograph session for Monday.

Inui-sensei drew Alita on a shikishi for the charity auction.
Sanada-san drew Dejiko & also signed the DVD box and DVD sleeve.
Yamaga-san drew the Pringles mascot man on a shikishi.

The Pringles illustration was so cute!
I wanted to bid on it.

We found out later than Inui-sensei’s shikishi went for $1000!
I’m glad we were able to help w/ the Breast Cancer Foundation.

I left the guests in the green room, and headed to do the Broccoli Books panel.
I didn’t have any announcements, but Manga Caster Ed asked some questions where I leaked some info. He always knows how to get me into trouble. Deep trouble, Takkun.

At the end of the panel, Sanada-san popped in to say hi.
She even said hello as Dejiko in English!
It was very cute!

After the Broccoli panel, Yamaga-san hosted the screening of Gurren Lagann, a new GAINAX series that’s airing in Japan. He refers to it as the anime made by the “young staff.” And the Eva movies as the anime made by the “old dudes.” It’s because the Eva team is all in their 40s.

Then it was the second Inui-sensei panel.
Half of the attendees were at the previous panel, so we’re sorry we repeated a lot of the information. I should have thought of other things for him to talk about. Or have an MC.

Inui-sensei showed a color promo image of Ratman, a new manga series that will be running in Shounen Ace magazine starting in the August 2007 issue (June 26 release). He also had a copy of the 4-page preview manga that ran in the July 2007 issue, so we showed that as well.

Inui-sensei said he should have brought a DVD of Murder Princess anime, at least to show the opening sequence, if not the full episode. I should have thought about it too.

After the panel, we took a short break & went to the dealer’s room for Inui-sensei’s second autograph session. The booth was right underneath the air conditioning fan, and it was really cold.

We had also picked 15 numbers for people who won the sketch autograph. Some of those who showed up won a sketch, so we’ll be seeing them tomorrow.

Sketches tomorrow!
I have a practice sketch that Inui-sensei did that I will give-away on the Broccoli Books fan club mailing list, so stay tuned!

In Italy there is a comic book entitled Rat-Man. Could you say if the Ratman manga by Inui is a japan version of the italian Rat-Man?

This is Rat-Man by Leo Ortolani:

Inui-sensei’s new series Ratman is a complete original.

From what I remember from the panels:
It’s about a boy who dreams about being a hero, but he doesn’t think he’ll make a cool hero because he’s only 152cm. One day he gets kidnapped by an evil organization & is forced to become a villain.

He wanted to use all the nuances of the word “rat” in English, and that’s how he came up w/ the title.
