I received a call from ADR director Fusako today.
She wanted to know the going rate for translating anime these days.

I haven’t worked on an anime series since sola, so I gave her a rough range. I don’t know if rates have gone down or up these days, since there’s less anime coming out.

You’d assume that rates would go down because there are a lot of translators that are out of work. Less demand, but the same supply. Basic economics would tell you that the rates would go down.

But with less work, translators might be asking for more pay. Especially the good translators that put out consistent work & meet deadlines (& in high demand). If demand is low, but the supply is just as low, the demanding side might have to raise the budget to intersect the narrow supply line.

There isn’t a lot of news going around in the anime industry.
What’s the current buzz among fans? What fansubs are people watching? Are there good series coming out from Japan? I should read through Newtype…
