Designer Chris finished the new DVD menu for the FLCL Ultimate Edition disc 1, so I sent it to Production IG for approval.

He still has to work on the designs for disc 2 - 4, so he’ll be busy all week.

Production assistant Krystal has been working the last 5 months on a soon-to-be-announced feature on the FLCL Ultimate Edition DVD set. It didn’t help that there were a bunch of conventions in between that she had to prepare for.

So producer Dee got the work order into Blink Digital, although we don’t have all the parts for them yet. Is it my fault? Yeah, kinda.

We still don’t have all the details finalized yet.
More information to come.

4 discs of FLCL… so does that mean 2 of them will only have one episode each or is the 4th a special features disc? I’m looking forward to it either way, hahaha

  2. Abe says:

Is there going to be any US version extras? I’d love to hear a commentary featuring most of the main cast for at least a single episode.

  3. Jeff says:

WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!! Thank you so much for doing this. You guys said a few words about this ultimate edition back in 2005 June (or July?) and no info about it came out after that so I was freakin out with the possibility of it being canceled. I’m extremely looking forward to it.

  4. dan says:

I think that the discs will be setup the same as the original releases. The 4th disc is most likely an extras disc.

  5. Chiyosuke Jayceon Demitrius says:

Ah, this is good to hear as I got rid of my original FLCL DVDs awhile ago. I will say this, the words “Blink Digital” shoot fear into the hearts of many. Anyway it’s good to finally hear something about this set. Hopefully it’ll be really worth it.

  6. RedTail says:

Four discs for a six episode series that already had an R1 release? Yea right… FLCL was good, but not that good.

  7. dan says:

Like what Chiyosuke says, we fear for this release since Blink Digital is authoring these discs. We can expect to see glitchy audio or video. Also, BlinkDigital used to be Ascent Media

Examples of BlinkDigital’s work are the GiTS Season 1 and 2 DVDs, sCryEd and Appleseed as well as one of the .hack series.

  8. Evan says:

The fourth disc will probably be this:

  9. Malcolm says:

One of the discs may include the japanese test type dvd (collection of flcl music videos)

  10. DanielJr says:

Any word on how much this collection is going to retail for? I don’t see myself paying more than $60 for it.

  11. dan says:

I’ll buy it even if it retails for $89.98 (Price for 3 DVDs). It’ll go for as little as $54 at places like DVDPacific.com. The 3 individual discs at DVDPacific run at $17.93 each or $53.79 for all 3.

  12. Hobbes says:

I think i’m on the fence right now — I really love FLCL, but I really dont think there’s going to be much on the new DVD’s to make it worth buying. I thought it was sort of a rip to have two eps per disc (at $30 a pop) in the first place, but to extend it to even more volumes seems entirely unnecessary — It’s really not difficult to have those bonus features on a two-volume set. That’s just my $.02; I truly hope I’m pleasantly surprised.

FYI Blink Digital did the original FLCL DVDs as Ascent. It’s only natural that they would be doing the new version. They’ve done all of our DVDs.

I’ve never seen any of the titles listed, but Blink, like any other authoring house, sends out test discs that have to be checked thoroughly. All problems should have been discovered in the test disc phase and remedied immediately. That sounds more like a QA problem on the part of the company that Blink is authoring for. I’m not defending Blink, but I don’t understand why they would get the total blame and harbor this “notorious reputation.”

  14. dan says:

To Hobbes. FLCL is an OVA, so OVAs will always be more expensive than a TV series, and just how many people actually buy a DVD at full SRP nowadays with BestBuy and online retailers?

  15. dan says:

Just saw at TheRightStuf, the set now has a release date of Nov 21, 2006

  16. dan says:

Oh, and an SRP of $69.95. TRSI sells it during the pre-order period for $52.46 (or $47.21 with GotAnime membership). When it gets listed on DVDPacific, it should cost about $42). I think this new set is well worth the price.

  17. Paul says:

Where can i buy this???Can anyone give me a link?

  18. dan says:

    well, here’s one place:

  19. G-unot says:

The very reason I didn’t by the OVA originally on DVD because it was over priced…I mean come on, with 2 episodes per disc they’re practically milking you of your money, but now with this announcement I absolutely can’t wait to pick this up! FLCL = fave anime ever…
