And the long awaited box design.

It’s a “rigid telescopic box.”
A technical term for a stiff cardboard box with a top lid that slides over an inner box edge of the bottom half.

Hmm… I have to admit, for once I’m a little disappointed. With such cool new art used for the digi-pack sleeve, I was anticipated some new colorful, dynamic group shot or something for the box. Instead we get two rehashed pieces and a very odd color scheme; I’m seeing yellow, black, red, pink, orange, and gray. A bit all over the place.

    Oh yeah, and white.

Much apologizes for Comment before, I confused te digipack sleve with the cover. Either way though, it jsut seems like Naota is lacking from the box designs. IDK the set feels kind of rushed to me. I think mabye a few more months of designing the set and adding extras might make this box much better

Considering the pricetag and all, I think the designs and all the extra items are of good quality. I do wish this design was more colorful/abstract looking, but I don’t mind.

It’s not what I expected, and at first blush, I was a little disappointed.

However, it’s already grown on me, and all it took was thirty seconds. The deep golds and fiery reds make for a striking appearance, accentuated further by black borders. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever seen that color combination before. I see you have the Atomsk symbol and the Pillows P! logo on there — two icons to identify FLCL fans by. Someone said these art pieces have been rehashed, but for what it’s worth, they’re new to me.

A cute space girl and a robot, all set to a neon-charged color scheme — sounds fooly cooly enough to me. A little deceptive, too, so those watching it for the first time won’t know what hit ‘em.

One question, though, about the box. I don’t understand how it opens. It sounds like the top slides off? If so, that’s very interesting; I don’t think I’ve ever seen something like that before. Also, I’m not sure if you’re familiar with the slipcases that DC Comics’ Absolute Editions come in, but is it a similar type of box? You could shoot those things with a magnum, and the bullet would spang off harmlessly. ^_^

    Ugh. Hideous.

Judging by all your other designs for FLCL (including the other designs for this box set) I know you can do better than this. So please do.

Some slightly more contructive suggestions: Don’t make the character art this ugly yellow colour. If you’re going for a bright, neon effect, at least go for a more striking lemon shade, or for bright blue or pink. Use the actual logo on the front and back or don’t have “FLCL” written there at all (I’d find both more acceptable than using this very plain logo).

Also… While the art is new to me, I’d much rather have better art that isn’t new to me (i.e. some the original cover art from the individual DVDs). It’s the outside that I will see most often when it’s sitting on my shelf for all eternity, and I’d say I’m unlikely to think, “Gee, I’m glad they used this inferior art just so it doesn’t look the same as the individual discs that went out of print 10 years ago…”

Sorry for being overly negative, but that’s just how this box design strikes me.

If you were to change the art, I’d change the Haruko side to the image from the cover of the original Volume One DVD release. Y’know, the one where she’s sitting with her guitar. I know it’s inside the digipack, but that’s one of my favorite artpieces, and it conveys how cool and different Haruko is much more effectively.

    Listen to the fans!

Frankly I think it’s quite boring. If the top comes off then the trim is OK I guess, though black/red/grey isn’t exactly a colour combination I associate with FLCL. The two pictures are what really drags it down though, something more colourful with a white background would perhaps be better. Now that I think about it I’d even prefer having the wrap-around art from the original box together with the trim, even though I already have the previous box.

i love the box design, cant we all just agree to be thankful that synch point is even bringing out a ult edition, considering that the company couldve been content with just the flcl 3 dvds instead of releasing this ult edition
