A Quick Introduction to Manga Genres
Shonen manga
Boy’s manga. (Translated to “young boy” in Japanese) Targeted towards middle school and older male readers, but usually crosses over to all ages and sexes. Shonen manga usually focus on adventure stories. Many feature fantastical elements.
Shoujo (shōjo) manga
Girl’s manga. (Literally means “young girl” in Japanese). Aimed elementary to high school age girls, but can also cross over to all ages and sexes. Some feature fantastical elements. Some stories have romantic/everyday story lines teen audiences can appreciate.
Josei manga
Created mostly for women. Targeted to older high school girls and women. Stories tend to be realistic, covering the lives of young women. Many stories have frank and adult depictures of relationships and sex. Josei titles with graphic depictions of sex will usually be labeled 18+ and are shrink-wrapped.
YAOI manga
A sub-genre of josei manga featuring male x male relationships. Frank depictions of homosexual relationships and sex. Most YAOI releases are labeled 18+ for sexual situations and are shipped shrink-wrapped.
Shonen-Ai manga
Not to be confused with the shonen category, shonen-ai (translated to Boy’s Love) is a less graphic and more romantic depiction of male/male relationships.
Seinen manga
Targeted to teens and older males. Contains more mature story lines. Can be fantastical. Contains more mature/adult depictions of relationships for older readers. Seinen titles with graphic depictions of sex will usually be labeled 18+ and are shrink-wrapped.
